Cronulla Beach in Sydney, New South Wales was the scene of racist mob-violence yesterday. In what has been described as disgusting, un-Australian and shameful behaviour, participants in a 5000-strong mob assaulted people suspected of being of Lebanese origin. The angry, alcohol-fuelled crowd also turned on anyone who tried to help the victims, including police, security guards and ambulance officers.

The Australian Federal Government is currently building a "Guantanamo Bay-style detention facility" - a $210 million, 800-bed Immigration Reception and Processing Centre - on Christmas Island, 1400km off Australia's northwest coast. The project has residents concerned about the prospect of having imprisoned detainees and possible terrorism suspects as neighbours.
Christmas Islanders fear the remote detention facility will be Australia's very own "Guantanamo Bay." (1 comment, 1180 words in story) Read and discuss full story By Drog (Canada), Section Australia
A coordinated set of Australian protests against proposed anti-terror bills and calling on the withdrawal of troops from Iraq began in Sydney today. Approximately one thousand people gathered in Belmore Park in the center of the New South Wales capital for a rally and march through the city.
The new legislation may, if passed, suppress some forms of dissent. David Bernie, a speaker from the NSW Council for Civil Liberties, said. "We are seeing a big change. Now, ASIO questioning warrants, people subject to those are not allowed to talk about it for two years. Now, this is automatic, and it is automatic irrespective of whether there is any need for secrecy or not. So ASIO doesn't have to apply for any gag order, the gag order applies automatically. Its stops not only that person talking about it, but their lawyer talking about or the media talking about it." Jon Stanhope, the Australian Capital Territory Chief Minister, has posted a confidential draft of the proposed Australian anti-terror bill to his website. Mr Stanhope says he hopes posting draft counter-terrorism laws on his website will open community debate about the issue and has stated that he will not comply with instructions from the Commonwealth to remove the document. The Australian Labor Party is backing his actions.
The main impetus for the action appears to be the short amount of time the Senate committee will have to debate the bill; just one day. In particular the Greens Senator Bob Brown has accused the Government of engineering the circumstances that only allow a one-day inquiry. "It was an extraordinary premeditated attack on the Senate committee system and effectively made the committee system a farce," said Senator Brown. Others, including the Australian Law Council, have expressed concerns about the scope of the proposed bill. (501 words in story) Read and discuss full story By Drog (Canada), Section Australia
Australian media analysis program Media Watch has accused popular national "current affairs" style program Today Tonight of deliberately quoting a Muslim youth out of context, with the intention of presenting a negative stereotype of the Muslim community. The allegations were aired during Monday nights episode.
According to Mediawatch, Abdul Elayoubi of the Lebanese Muslim Association was approached by Tim Noonan, a freelance film producer wanting to produce a short documentary to air on the Seven Network. Mr Elayoubi was cautious because of a prior misrepresentation, however was assured that the program would "show Australians from non-Islamic backgrounds the viewpoint of young Muslims and the pressure they face in an often hostile society", according to a letter from Peter Meakin, the Seven Network's head of news and current affairs. Elayoubi said "Tim told us he'd be doing the editing himself and would give it to Channel 7 completed," and was assured that quotes would not be taken out of context to further vilify Australian Muslims. As Wikinews reports, a 27-year-old former beauty student from the Gold Coast of Australia faces the death penalty after she was allegedly caught in possession of illegal drugs at Bali airport. Appearing before an Indonesian judge's court after authorities found 4.1kg of high-grade cannabis in her unlocked bodyboard bag at the airport last October, she could be sentenced to death by firing squad, the maximum penalty for the crime.
Protesting her innocence, Schapelle Corby maintains the contraband was placed in her luggage by airport workers allegedly involved in a drug running operation. Ms. Corby staggered and paused to vomit, as she was led through a throng of journalists watching her trial for marijuana possession in Jakarta, Indonesia, earlier today. According to Wikinews, a report released by Allan Gyngell of the Lowy Institute on Monday, has revealed that Australians view US foreign policy to be as dangerous as Islamic fundamentalism. It also found that only 58 percent of the population had a positive view of the United States.
The report, entitled "Australians speak 2005: public opinion and foreign policy" (downloadable PDF file), showed that global warming and nuclear proliferation were greater foreign policy concerns than terrorism and illegal immigration. 70 per cent of Australians were worried about global warming, the report stated, while only 63 per cent were worried about international terrorism. The report also stated that most Australians believed improving the global environment should be Australia's number one foreign policy goal. Wikinews reports that Australian prime minister John Howard has admitted this week's decision to commit an additional 450 troops to Iraq is a policy backflip.
During the 2004 election campaign Mr Howard indicated that there would be no major increase in the number of Australian troops in Iraq. However yesteday's announcement is set to more than double the number of Australian troops on the ground in Iraq. Mr Howard justified the reversal of policy as being in the "broader interests of democracy in the Middle East". He also explained that the decision came in response to requests from British and Japanese leaders. (260 words in story) Read and discuss full story By Drog (Canada), Section Australia
North Korea and Iran aren't the only countries interested in nuclear weapons research. On November 26th, Greenpeace Australian released a report entitled "Secret's Lies and Uranium Enrichment" (PDF), which reveals a classified uranium enrichment project at the Lucas Heights nuclear facility in Sydney. As ABCTV's The World Today reports, the Greenpeace report claims that a little known company called Silex is using the facility to develop a process to enrich uranium with the aid of lasers. The Silex technology has been classified by both the United States and Australian Governments, but the company says it is simply researching more efficient ways to enrich uranium, which would then be used to generate electricity in nuclear power plants.
