 God Bless Canada!

Politics

I hadn't realized until recently that Stephen Harper was using "God Bless Canada!" as a tagline for his speeches. Some may think this a harmless, or even beneficent, expression for a politician to use, but for those with knowledge of history, nothing could be a more frightening.

 Ottawa Police Pepper-spray Children

Crime & Punishment

By Drog (Canada), Section Canada

As the Ottawa Sun reports, four children, including a two-month-old baby boy, were rushed to hospital early yesterday after they and the rest of their family were pepper-sprayed by police.

About 20 members of the Ozeir family were having a family reunion to welcome a visiting family member from Lebanon. The men were playing cards and there was a lot of noise, but there was no drinking as they were all observing Ramadan.

When 19-year old Malak Ozeir stepped outside shortly after midnight to get some fresh air because her brother and sister were
arguing, two police officers were there and asked to come inside. She says that she told them there was no problem inside. When they asked again, she says she told them they were not needed and asked them to leave.

According to Malak, this is what happened next.

No Lebanese Reconciliation Before The Dignified Return

None of the other Lebanese people throughout Lebanon has endured the horrible injustice suffered by those Lebanese citizens living in the Southern security zone and Jezzine city.

For the last thirty years Lebanon's Southern citizens were and still are victims of alienation, assaults, persecution, exodus and impoverishment not only at the hands of terrorists' and fundamentalist' foreign and local militias, among which is the Hezbollah, but most importantly as a result of complete abandonment by all successive Lebanese governments since 1975.

Dr. Tewolde Berhan Gebre Egziabher, the Ethiopian government's chief scientist and its representative to the Montreal-based UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) had his passport returned without the requested Canadian visa, and without explanation. Dr. Tewolde is Africa's chief negotiator for the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.

Tewolde had announced he would be visiting Montreal the first week of August to lobby for the labeling of genetically modified (GM) seeds and food products and urge companies and governments to accept liability for environmental contamination their seeds could lead to. Canada has yet to ratify the UN biosafety protocol and opposes compulsory genetically modified labeling and liability.

Canadian House of Commons approves same-sex marriage

Civil Liberties

By Wikinews

In a 158 to 133 vote of the House of Commons held Tuesday night, Canadian MPs have approved the legalization of same-sex weddings in Canada. If the Senate passes Bill C-38 and the Governor General gives royal assent, Canada would become the third country in the world to legalize same-sex weddings after the Netherlands and Belgium. The bill presented to the House of Commons by the Liberal government of Prime Minister Paul Martin has passed mainly because of support by the left-wing New Democratic Party of Jack Layton and the support of the separatist Bloc Québécois, which enabled it to overcome the staunch opposition of the Conservative Party.

Canadian Military Accused Of Agent Orange Cover Up

War & Terror

By Wikinews

Canadian military officials are being accused of covering up the use of the deadly chemical agent Agent Orange and other defoliants during the 1950s and 1960s at a New Brunswick base.

At a public meeting attended by at least 200 people, defence officials said only a small amount of the herbicide was used, over a total of seven days between 1966 and 1967 at the army base to clear foliage to prevent fires during artillery training and to clear the view for soldiers.

Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin's Liberal government is planning on passing the same-sex marriage bill before the spring session winds up.
