June 7/2006 The Lebanese people are hopeful that their Leaders who are scheduled to meet in Beirut on June the 8th in a new "National Dialogue" session to make the tragic dilemma of "Al Naameh" coastal town a priority.
I do not know if the leaders and other officials of my homeland, Lebanon, really appreciate the dangers of Ahmed Jibril's tunnels (Head of PFLP-Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine) and his organization in the town of Naameh 10 miles south of Beirut. These tunnels, which are dug, against any law and common sense, under the houses of a significant number of resident families of this embattled hostage town. These Lebanese people, who are afflicted with their State, their leaders and the rogue sisterly country, Baathist Syria, live in houses knowing that foreign military forces live beneath them in tunnels that are in fact deadly weapons caches, rockets, missiles and the like!! One can only condemn the shameful and horrific attack on Lebanon's freedom, sovereignty, and independence that robbed us of one of the country's most ardent defenders. The voice of Lebanon's prominent journalist, politician and MP Gibran Tueni was brutally and cowardly silenced on Monday when a car bomb took his life and the lives of three of his bodyguards, and injured more than thirty others who happened to be near the site of the attack. December 6/2005 The newly uncovered Syrian Baathists' horrible crimes of mass murder against the Lebanese people should not pass unnoticed and without judicial accountability, nor should the free and decent Lebanese leaders and citizens, and the free world communities and human rights organizations, once again bow to the Baathist terror and acquiesce to the concept of "forget and forgive". It is time for all the Lebanese actual community representatives, political leaders, MP'S, Cabinet Ministers, and high-ranging clergy to immediately engage into an objective, transparent, authentic and serious national dialogue. This dialogue has become a must after the liberation of Lebanon was achieved last April ending thirty years of Syrian savage occupation. The decision-making process of the Lebanese people has now presumably become free and accordingly their leadership can and without any Syrian intimidation or pressure, decide on productive plans for the future of their country in mere patriotic milieus to immunize Lebanon's democracy, tolerance, coexistence, peace, welfare and identity.
During its deplorable occupation era, Baathist Syria had forced since 1982 the armed Hezbollah Shiites organization under the disguise of resistance against Israel, as well as many other armed Lebanese and Palestinian militias, safeguarded the outlaw status quo of the Cantons it created in all the Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon and produced a corrupt and conscienceless generation of Lebanese puppet subservient politicians who are professionals in camouflage, flimflam, fraud, knavery, treason, lying and cheating. An opponent of Syrian influence in Lebanon, George Hawi, was assassinated today in Beirut. A car bomb had apparently been hidden under the passenger's seat of the vehicle he was in; the blast killed Hawi almost instantly. Hawi was formerly the secretary of the Lebanese Communist Party. He had long been a Syrian ally, but recently switched sides, criticizing the Syrian occupation of the country, which was withdrawn after the similar assassination of former Prime Minister of Lebanon Rafik Hariri brought international pressure. Retreating soldiers, flashing victory signs, completed a withdrawal spurred by intense international pressure and massive Lebanese street protests against a Syrian occupation force that at one time reached 40,000. Masnaa residents of the Bekaa Valley region danced, waved flags, raised banners and cried tears of brotherhood in celebration as they witnessed the last troop convoys passing. The Tuesday afternoon border crossing marked the official exit from Lebanon of the last army remnants, leaving 29 years of occupation behind. Syria's Ambassador to the U.N. Fayssal Mekhdad, ensured the press the pullout was "full and complete." "I have just submitted a letter to both the secretary-general and the president of the Security Council from his excellency Mr. Farouq al-Sharaa on behalf of the Syrian government confirming the Syrian full withdrawal from Lebanon in terms of withdrawing the troops, the security apparatus and the [intellegence] assets." Mekdad said. (645 words in story) Read and discuss full story By Drog (Canada), Section Lebanon
Just ten days after mass protests forced pro-Syrian Prime Minister Omar Karami and his entire cabinet -- packed with pro-Syrian ministers -- to step down, Karami has been reappointed by President Ιmile Lahoud, perhaps feeling emboldened by the massive pro-Syria demonstration orchestrated by Hezbollah days ago.
As the Associated Press reports, Karami immediately invited the opposition to join him in a national unity government, saying he will begin consultations early next week with lawmakers to form a Cabinet. But the opposition immediately rejected his reappointment, saying that his national unity proposal is a trap to bring opposition members into the Cabinet without giving them a say in policymaking, thus ensuring Syria's continued dominance in Lebanon's politics. The Associated Press reports that Lebanon's Prime Minister Omar Karami and Cabinet have resigned, exactly two weeks after the assassination of opposition leader and former prime minister Rafik Hariri. More than 25,000 protesters cheered outside parliament when they heard the announcement.
Many Lebanese have accused Syria and Karami's pro-Damascus government of having masterminded the bombing that killed Hariri and 16 others, since it was apparently a large, sophisticated underground bomb that could only have been planted by Lebanese security officials loyal to Syria. The people have been pressing hard since the bombing for the government to step down and for Syria to withdraw its 15,000 troops now in Lebanon. (277 words in story) Read and discuss full story |
