Have you ever been so busy that you missed your own birthday? Well I've been so busy lately with my new job (which is why you haven't seen me around too much lately) that I didn't even notice that this site's first birthday came and went already.

It was on October 4, 2004 that The World Forum was launched.

Time does fly.

I'll be away for the next four or five days, and I'm not sure how much internet access I'll have. So everyone please feel free to post your own blog entries and submit your own stories. Don't forget to vote on submissions in the queue (click on the 'Submissions' link in your userbox in the top of the right column of the frontpage).

Just a reminder to everyone, stories that are submitted by users go to a voting queue, where they await our votes to decide whether they should be posted to the frontpage, posted to the section pages, or dumped.

There is one story in there right now (click on the Submissions link in your userbox at the top of the right column of the front page), which has been awaiting votes for awhile now. Thus far, I'm the only one who voted on it (I voted it to the section pages, myself).

 No More Google News

Well, it would appear that Google News has modified their algorithm and, as a result, our stories no longer get the high profile they once did. We're still in Google News, but no longer on the front page or the section pages. You pretty much have to search for one of our headlines in order to find us. I've written to them asking why but received no response thus far.

I'm not sure how many comments and new users we got from Google News, but it now seems likely we won't get any more. So now it becomes even more important that we get market ourselves to build up a real community. We need a better ranking in search engine results and we need more people linking to us. Any ideas are most welcome.

I have just disabled anonymous posts, as the only way I can think of to stop the deluge of comment spam we've been getting. From now on, you need to have an account in order to post.

It's unfortunate, but spammers can really ruin things for everyone.

 Who's Online

In case you're wondering, our traffic did not just drastically drop, despite what the Who's Online box says. We recently moved to a much better server. It's way faster and able to handle bigger loads. Unfortunately, ever since the move, the Who's Online box shows just one Unknown User even when there are hundreds. We are still investigating.

The previous discussion about Site Changes is becoming unwieldy with its many comments, so here's another one, just to keep the arrangement comfortably manageable.

Drog, we have a spam problem that I stumbled on by chance. It's best if you could give the comments a zero rating, not delete them, because I want to inspect them to look for common features and find other similar spam.

 Editorial feedback on page layout

The World Forum

In my opinion, the new layout for story pages is not an improvement.

There's a dramatic change in the impression of the site, the atmosphere that the page conveys. The ads have become so obtrusive that they dominate the page.

They're so dominating that, looking at the page, it feels to me as if the main purpose of the site were to provide ad space, to make money by getting people to come and click ads. It feels as if only after that some articles were wedged in between the ads, as something to lure people to come to the ads.

When the original vision of a meeting-place for people from all over the world recedes into a second-rate position after that kind of view, the vision doesn't survive. It feels like the vision has vanished from the pages.
