By Machi (Canada), Section Bolivia

"Washington rumbles with suppressed outrage over Latin America's latest demonstrations of its sovereignty - Bolivia's nationalization of its oil and natural gas reserves. At the same time, newly inaugurated president Evo Morales is a prime candidate to join Washington's pantheon of Latin American bad boys, presently dominated by Fidel Castro and Hugo Chávez," wrote COHA director Larry Birns.

A Hundred Scholars beg Cultural Reforms to Argentine President

No constructive or lasting policy could
be successfully implemented if in the agencies of art, science, research
and higher education, practices and habits do not have their organization
chart restructured in a way that would eliminate the corruption,
falsifying, genuflective behavior, opportunism, moral indifference and,
what is more serious and lethal, the self-censorship or fear to express
 oneself freely.

 Fujimori arrested in Chile

Politics

By Carlos (Peru), Section Peru
Posted on Mon Nov 28, 2005 at 09:26:25 PM PST

Alberto Fujimori, Peru's ruling dictator from 1990 - 2000, crossed the Pacific Ocean and was arrested last week in Santiago de Chile while stepping down from a private jet. Peru is now preparing the extradition notebook.  Fujimori's gamble was obviously a surprise.

A strategy master, Fujimori makes everyone speculate on the reasons for the trip. Photographies taken in Chile show a disturbed and evasive Fujimori though.  The weekly magazine Caretas, on its weekly cover, affirms that Fujimori "made a mistake with Chile".  President Lagos and his probable successor, Michelle Bachelet, has made it clear that they have no intention to provide special status to the fugitive.

Brazil is threatening to break the patent of US-based Abbott Laboratories as it pushes ahead with its programme to supply its people with free AIDS drugs.

Brazil has given Abbott a deadline of July 7 to cut the prices of its drug Kaletra or a Brazilian company will begin cloning it. This move would test recent World Trade Organization concessions allowing poor countries to produce generic drugs for local health emergencies.

 Crisis Averted In Bolivia

Politics

By Drog (Canada), Section Bolivia
Posted on Fri Jun 10, 2005 at 11:05:58 AM PST

Bolivia has been in a spiraling political crisis in recent weeks as native groups, calling for nationalization of energy reserves and a special constitutional assembly, seized several oil field installations and blockaded the capital city of La Paz for three weeks amid violent protests, causing fuel and food shortages throughout the city. Some analysts have speculated that South America's poorest nation, polarized between indigenous movements demanding more power and wealthy regional provinces demanding for more independence, may even be on the verge of civil war.

The crisis may have been averted for the moment, however. As Reuters and the Associated Press report, President Carlos Mesa has resigned, as he did last March during similar protests. This time, however, Congress has accepted his resignation and named Supreme Court President Eduardo Rodriguez as the interim leader, after the two congressional leaders first in line for the post declined the position.

"Hopefully this decision will help pacify the country," Mesa said as he left the presidential palace. "I apologize to the country, but I did my best."

 Amazon Deforestation Accelerating

Environment

By Drog (Canada), Section Brazil
Posted on Thu May 19, 2005 at 12:01:32 PM PST

By Wikinews

Figures released by the Brazilian government have shown that the rate of deforestation in the Amazon has increased.

In the period August 2003 to August 2004, 26 000 square kilometres of the rainforest was felled. This number is up 6% from the 12 month period prior to August 2003. The total proportion of felled Amazon now stands at 17.3%, according to the World Wildlife Fund. This has led many environmentalists to worry that the cattle and soy trade are being put above the environemnt.

The 2003-2004 period saw the second largest tree felling, per area, in the Amazon's history. The worst was 1994-1995. The year prior to August 2003 had been another bad year for deforestation, it now being the third worst in history. That 2002-2003 period had led Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's government to adopt an action plan to target deforestation. This included creating some of the largest reserves on earth and making closer satellite surveillance of threatened areas.

"This number is a tragedy and shows that deforestation is not a priority for the Lula government and that its plan [to fight destruction] is not working," said Paulo Adario, Greenpeace Amazon coordinator.

USA Cannot Criticize Venezuela For Buying Arms

Politics

By Inside View America (USA), Section Venezuela
Posted on Wed Mar 30, 2005 at 07:08:49 PM PST

US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld heavily criticized Venezuela's decision to purchase arms from Russia during an interview while visiting Brazil.

Rumsfeld justifies his position with the fear that such arms could end up in the hands of the FARC, a guerilla group in Colombia seen as a terrorist threat by the American government.

Nice try, but no one is South America is buying it, especially after the U.S. government supported politically and financially a failed coup d'état against Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez not long ago.

President of Venezuela Creates Telesur to Spread his Positions in Latin America

After almost being removed from power by a US supported opposition in his country, Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez started his own private crusade against the Bush administration. The first step was to diversify Venezuela's oil buyers: he now has China and India in his portfolio. Now he is using a much more creative means: the media.
