Moderating Submitted Stories
What is the moderation queue?
Once a story is submitted, it is placed in purgatory, otherwise known as the moderation queue. Here, members (those with an account) review it and vote on whether it is worthy enough to be posted to the site for everyone to read. Each member is allowed one vote per article. There are four ways to vote:
- Post it to the Front Page! (+1) - You like the story so much that you feel it is worthy of being on the front page of the World Forum. Note that this option only exists for stories in the International section.
- Post it to the Section Page Only (+1) - You like the story and feel it is worthy of being posted on the section page, but not on the front page. Again, if the story is not in the International section, it cannot be posted to the Front Page anyway.
- Abstain (0) - You are completely apathetic or ambivalent regarding the story.
- Dump It! (-1) - You feel the story is simply not up to par and should not be posted at all.
After you have voted, a list of who voted what way will appear on the right.
It is important to remember that, just because an article might not be about a topic you are interested in, it is not a reason to vote -1. Vote 0 if you are not sure. Likewise, if you have seen the article posted on another web forum, that is not a reason to vote a story -1. Vote it 0 if you do not really care.
How is a story's fate decided?
Everyone's vote contributes to a story's "score", which is displayed after you vote. A mathematical formula, based on the percentage of total registered users on the World Forum, is used to calculate a "post threshold" and a "dump threshold". Once the story's score reaches either of these two thresholds, it either posts or dumps. If a story posts, and at least half of its votes were "+1 Front Page", it will appear on the front page. Otherwise it will appear on the section page.
Does moderating affect my mojo?
No. Taking the time to moderate story submissions is much appreciated and makes you a more valuable member of the World Forum. But your mojo is only affected by your story and comment ratings. |
