FAQ - Reading and Navigating

Reading and Navigating

How do I navigate around in this site?

Clicking on the main "The World Forum" logo always brings you to the front page. Clicking on any of the capitalized navigation headings in the grey bar underneath the logo takes you to those locations. Any other text elsewhere on the page that is underlined is a link. Hover over it with your mouse to see the URL in the status bar at the bottom of your browser, and click on it to go there.

How do I see stories that didn't make it to the front page?

Click on the "section" link at the top of the page. The resulting page lists the sections where World Forum submissions are routed after they are accepted. Aside from Blogs and Site News, the sections are geographic in nature. There's an "International" section, for news everyone in the world may be interesed in, as well as a section for each continent--Africa, Asia, Australia/Oceania, Europe, North America and South America. In addition, each continent section has a subsection for each of the countries within it. Those stories which are NOT in bold are the ones that didn't make it to the Front Page. Only International stories have the option of being posted to the front page.

How do I see older front page stories?

On the right side of the front page is the "Older Front Page" box, containing links to stories that were on the front page at one time, but have since fallen off due to new front page stories being posted.

What are all those links on the right side of the story?

When a story is posted, any links contained within it are listed on the right side, for ease of navigation.

How do I respond to a poll?

If a story has an associated poll, it will appear in the right column. If you want to participate in it, simply click on which option you want and then press the "Vote" button. Click on the "View Results" button to see the current results of the poll.

What are hotlists?

All posted articles have a "+" sign in a circle to the left of the story title, which is visible to logged-on members. Clicking this image link will add a link to the story in your "Hotlist" box in the right column, along with the number of total comments and the number of new comments since you last visited the story. Thus you will be able to monitor the story's discussion progress and quickly rejoin it whenever you wish from anywhere in the site. To remove the link from your hotlist box, simply click the "-" link left of the story title.

The Hotlist box also allows you to track responses to your comments, stories that you wrote, and particular users' blog entries.

How do I search The World Forum?

You can search The World Forum for just about anything. Click on the search link in the navbar at the top of the screen. Enter the text you want to search for, how many hits you want returned per page, and what section of The World Forum you want it to look in.

You can also scroll down to the bottom of any page, enter the text into the search box located there, and then click search or press enter.
