 Fujimori arrested in Chile

Alberto Fujimori, Peru's ruling dictator from 1990 - 2000, crossed the Pacific Ocean and was arrested last week in Santiago de Chile while stepping down from a private jet. Peru is now preparing the extradition notebook.  Fujimori's gamble was obviously a surprise.

A strategy master, Fujimori makes everyone speculate on the reasons for the trip. Photographies taken in Chile show a disturbed and evasive Fujimori though.  The weekly magazine Caretas, on its weekly cover, affirms that Fujimori "made a mistake with Chile".  President Lagos and his probable successor, Michelle Bachelet, has made it clear that they have no intention to provide special status to the fugitive.

Was Fujimori really expecting a warm welcome in Chile?  Another rumour is that, before the imminent accusation by the Peruvian Justice Department to the Court the International of Justice, Japan preferred to "let him out of Japan".

Fujimori left to Japan Saturday 5 in an airplane deprived from Haneda airport, the second largest one in Tokyo.  It was accompanied by his party leader, Héctor Béjar, also by his friend Arturo Makino and the journalist, Nagatsu Kasutaka, from a Japanese state television network.  During its only scale, in Tijuana, Fujimori is registered by the Mexican authorities.  According to a report, the Mexican police sent an urgent cable to the Interpol in Lima without receiving answer. Sunday afternoon, Fujimori lands in the airport of Pudahuel, Santiago de Chile.  Fujimori disembarks with Peruvian passport, but nobody retains him.  It even had a tourist visa.  This passivity motivated public criticism by Michelle Bachelet. Just before midnight, and after Peru's request to take Fujimori in custody, he is arrested.

Juan Carlos Osorio, Fujimori's lawyer requests conditional freedom, but this one was denied by Orlando Alvarez, Chilean judge in charge of the Fujimori case. So far, the political will in Chile is the one to respect the legal way. The following steps are in the hands of Peruvian justice.  The Office of the judge advocate general for the case of Fujimori is preparing 22 notebooks of extradition, one for each accusation against Fujimori.  It is estimated that these will be ready in a month.

It is enough with demonstrating the existence of reasonable indications to open process against him.  In this line, a diverse set of testimonies would have to convince the Chilean justice that this is not "a political" judgment, as Fujimori wants to make believe everyone.

Peruvian political leaders like Alan García have been heavily criticized for not taking side on this issue. "He doesn't want to take sides because it might hurt him during the elections, he wants Fujimori's votes!" says Jaime Salinas, future oponent of Mr. García in the forthcoming presidential elections.

The world could use more dialogue about its differences — a little understanding goes a long way. There are many online forums where people with different perspectives yell at each other and hurl abuse. There aren't so many where completely different points of view are expressed rationally and constructively. That's why The World Forum was created.
