USA Cannot Criticize Venezuela For Buying Arms

US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld heavily criticized Venezuela's decision to purchase arms from Russia during an interview while visiting Brazil.

Rumsfeld justifies his position with the fear that such arms could end up in the hands of the FARC, a guerilla group in Colombia seen as a terrorist threat by the American government.

Nice try, but no one is South America is buying it, especially after the U.S. government supported politically and financially a failed coup d'état against Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez not long ago.

Despite the reasons behind Rumsfeld's criticism against Venezuela, he is right when he says the FARC guerilla is a terrorist group and a real threat to democracy.

No matter how appealing the cause of the FARC is, this same appeal fades into repulsion once you take it account how the FARC guerilla supports itself: with heavy drug trafficking, kidnapping, massive extortion and terrorism.

It's unbelievable how the FARC guerilla tries to sabotage a democratically elected government (the one in Colombia) as still finds supporters among extreme leftists in South America.

Back to the Bush Administration, they are not making much progress finding allies in South America that will condemn Chavez.

The Brazilian Vice President and also Minister of Defense, Jose Alencar, was present during the interview but limited his comments to say Brazil supports Venezuela's sovereignty and will not condemn arms purchase even thought Brazil shares a border with Venezuela.

Today, March 29, U.S. President Bush called the President of Argentina seeking support. However, Argentina will not question Venezuela's decision either.

The world could use more dialogue about its differences — a little understanding goes a long way. There are many online forums where people with different perspectives yell at each other and hurl abuse. There aren't so many where completely different points of view are expressed rationally and constructively. That's why The World Forum was created.
