After almost being removed from power by a US supported opposition in his country, Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez started his own private crusade against the Bush administration. The first step was to diversify Venezuela's oil buyers: he now has China and India in his portfolio. Now he is using a much more creative means: the media.
Chavez decided to counter attack a U.S. led massive media campaign against his government with a new state sponsored TV Channel and News Agency that will cover all South America, broadcasting starts no later than April 2005.
The channel will have Venezuelan correspondents and offices and will try to compete with CNN offering a more "Latin" perspective on the news. The commanders of TELESUR's headquarters will be Andrés Izarra and Jorge Henrique Botero. The first is the Venezuelan Ministry of Information who has worked for NBC, CNN in Atlanta and for Rádio Caracas Televisión. The second name is more polemic. Mr. Botero is famous for his extensive coverage of the FARC guerilla. However, some people suspect his privileged access to the FARC is no coincidence. The question is, how far will they go? Well, that I don't know, but Castro is probably thinking right now, "Damn! If only I had had the media back in the 60s..."

The world could use more dialogue about its differences — a little understanding goes a long way. There are many online forums where people with different perspectives yell at each other and hurl abuse. There aren't so many where completely different points of view are expressed rationally and constructively. That's why The World Forum was created.
