Pagerank Spam in Old Stories

Drog, we have a spam problem that I stumbled on by chance. It's best if you could give the comments a zero rating, not delete them, because I want to inspect them to look for common features and find other similar spam.

I'd do it myself if i could, but the funny thing is that in spite of all the powers I now have on this site, I still don't have Trusted User status, so I can't.

I'm not proposing that you bypass the system to give me TU status, because I'd prefer to get TU status from comment ratings, once we get that going.

I have more to say on this, including a proposal for a technical solution that should help us find and remove all the spam of this kind quickly and easily. I'll write about this in comments below, when I have some more time.

For the time being I only suggest that you zero those comments. But note that at least one comment in the list should be spared.

I think the spam comments must be hidden ASAP, else Google's automatic algorithms might decide that we're a link farm. We don't want that! Even if Google doesn't react to this, leaving the spam there will probably encourage spammers.

I'm assuming that you have Trusted User status and can hide the comments by giving them zero ratings. Don't you? Is there some technical problem that prevents you from doing this?

At least one of the comments is not spam, so that one should not be hidden, probably all others are spam that needs to be hidden.

I plain forgot to hide them, then I was going through all the stories just now looking for the comments and couldn't find them, and realized somebody was hiding them just before I got to them! Thanks!

By the way, I'm looking into whether or not there is a way to write a box that will flag any suspicious comments. Say, anything comment added to a story that's older than a week. It would just help us to stay on top of it.

What I'd like to propose is similar but still quite different. It's an arrangement that would be useful to all our users. Helping us chase spam is a side effect.

Sometimes an interesting discussion will continue past the frontpage lifetime of a story. The only way people can notice that the discussion continues, if they haven't bookmarked it, is by going to some special page to check it -- page 2, 3 etc of the frontpage listings, page 2, 3 etc of the Site Talk listings, the story itself, etc. This means that readers miss discussions they'd be interested in, and discussions are cut short.

This could be solved with a margin box on the frontpage that shows stories sorted by the date-and-time of each story's most recent comment. Topmost in this box you'd see the story that got the last comment that was added anywhere on the site. Going down the list you go backward in time by the last comment date under each story.

This way people can revive old discussions whenever they want. And spam will show up too, for easy deletion.

I like your suggestion. I'll look into how that could be accomplished. I've also been meaning to rewrite the Previous Top Stories box, by the way, so that it shows new comments just like the other boxes do.

I've added a Top Stories box to the stories page. I seem to remember there was something wrong with it before which is why I didn't have it there, but I can't remember what. Maybe as I watch it over time, I'll remember. :)

I've been thinking of a way to do that for my site as well. I just haven't gotten to it yet.
