Hunter S. Thompson Predicted His Murder Would Be Labeled "Suicide"

Crime & Punishment

Every suicide of a famous person is accompanied by the inevitable conspiracy theories that the suicide was really a murder made to look like a suicide. Such is true for the recent suicide of Hunter S. Thompson. But as Wikinews reports, there may actually be reasons to suspect foul play.

Not once but at least twice, Hunter Thompson, the author of "Hey Rube: Blood Sport, the Bush Doctrine, and the Downward Spiral of Dumbness", predicted he would be murdered to shut him up. He also predicted it would be made to look like a suicide. Paul William Roberts, a friend of Thompson and a well known travel writer, received a disturbing phone call from Thompson the very eve of his death. Mr. Roberts reported the phone call as follows:

"Hunter telephoned me on Feb. 19, the night before his death. He sounded scared. It wasn't always easy to understand what he said, particularly over the phone, he mumbled, yet when there was something he really wanted you to understand, you did. He'd been working on a story about the World Trade Center attacks and had stumbled across what he felt was hard evidence showing the towers had been brought down not by the airplanes that flew into them but by explosive charges set off in their foundations. Now he thought someone was out to stop him publishing it: "They're gonna make it look like suicide," he said. "I know how these bastards think."

Update [2005-4-8 7:34:51 by Drog]: This story was in error. As Wikinews has reported here, Thompson did not tell his friend Paul William Roberts that he was afraid of being murdered the night before his death. Roberts wrote that as a fictional introductory to an obituary. The obituary goes on to say it's fictional, but many readers could not read the full article because the publication demanded pay per view.

In Jan. 2003 Thompson gave an interview on KDNK (Colorado) where he made a similar prediction; "Bush is really the evil one here and it is more than just him. We are the Nazis in this game and I don't like it. I am embarrassed and I am pissed off. I mean to say something. I think a lot of people in this country agree with me -...we'll see what happens to me if I get my head cut off next week -- it is always unknown or bushy-haired strangers who commit suicide right afterwards with no witnesses."

In addition, police found something odd about the gun Thompson supposedly used to kill himself. Deputy Ron Ryan said there was a spent shell casing, but there was no bullet in the firing chamber, as there should have been under normal circumstances. Sheriff's officer DiSalvo confirmed this opinion; "I think a bullet from the magazine should have cycled into the chamber".

Thompson died February 20th. The county coroner determined Thompson's death to be a suicide on February 21st. There was no CSI type of crime scene examination.

The world could use more dialogue about its differences — a little understanding goes a long way. There are many online forums where people with different perspectives yell at each other and hurl abuse. There aren't so many where completely different points of view are expressed rationally and constructively. That's why The World Forum was created.

I had heard of his radio interview several years ago, in which he predicted he might be murdered someday and that it would be made to look like a suicide. But I had never heard that he predicted it the very night before his death, due to a story he was working on. If true, I can totally see why some suspect it was murder and not suicide, despite some friends and family not being surprised by his suicide.

I personally thought it was very peculiar that he killed himself while having a normal, calm conversation on the phone with his wife, during which he made no mention of the fact that he planned to kill himself in a few seconds. That and the fact that he killed himself while his grandkids were in the house seems odd.

This story turned out to be a non-event. Go back to wikinews and have a look, it has been updated.

The writer based his story on a teaser paragraph given on a login page of a newspaper. The teaser paragraph turned out to be fiction. But many people took it to be fact, and the rumour has spread widely.

Thompson "suicide" (none / 0) (#4)
by Unknown User () on Fri Apr 08, 2005 at 04:10:07 PM PST

Actually if you read the article cited, it does not say Hunter Thompson did not make the call and say the things quoted and attributed to him. What it says is that he did commit suicide and was not murdered.

The article does not say Hunter Thompson did not make the call cited.

The article does not say Thompson did not have evidence relating to the World Trade Center demolition.

The article does say Hunter Thompson claimed, the night before he died, that he would soon be MURDERED YET IDENTIFIED AS A SUICIDE. The ONLY way the author contradicts the first paragraph is by saying Hunter Thompson was not murdered, but committed suicide, which is exactly what Thompson is quoted as predicting, that his murder would be misidentified as a suicide.

Apparently the word "should" has misled many people into believing that the first paragraph is a fabrication. The second paragraph does not say the first paragraph is fiction. It does, however, say that the first paragraph is how a tribute to Thompson SHOULD begin, which might explain why this tribute to Thompson DID begin with it. Once again, the article does NOT say that the first paragraph is fictional.

People are unwilling to believe that their government and the "powers that be" play with the lives of others as they would play with chess pieces. It makes them uncomfortable, so to relieve this discomfort people simply choose to believe a comforting fable. Killing himself over a broken hip, during an interrupted conversation with his wife? I don't think even Thompson would write something so implausible...

I have been unable to find this obituary that is causing all the trouble. I assume you've read it, so could you provide me with the link? Thanks.
