U.S. Senators Ben Nelson (D-NE) and Jeff Sessions (R-AL) have introduced the bipartisan Border Security Act of 2005 which would offer a multifaceted system of advanced technology, border patrol agents, border fences, guarded border crossings and ports of entry in order to secure US border with Mexico.
Critics of the bill, however, focused on how the border security system would affect illegal immigrant workers, adding that the US economy would suffer if illegal immigrants would be removed from the work force since they are the ones who fulfill the 'legitimate niche' in the labor market. Analysts see the economic cost of maintaining illegal immigrants is much bigger, however. Illegals do not pay local, state or federal taxes, and so do not contribute to taxes that support infrastructure that the rest of the legal workforce is paying for.
They also are a burden on taxpayer-supported social welfare and health care services; the Institute of Medicine estimates that nationwide, health care cost for illegal immigrants exceeds $35 billion a year. There are law enforcement issues, as organized crime in Mexico is fast replacing the Columbian cartels, doing $142 billion a year by UN estimates, in illegal drugs. Then, there's terrorism - of the 1.5 million people caught crossing the southern border, 155,000 came from countries other than Mexico and 649 were from countries identified to have ties to terrorist organizations. In October, an al Qaeda operative was captured by Mexican officials. The issue of illegal immigrants in the work force is obviously a complex economic and legal issue, but these are overshadowed by issues of national security and the need to prevent infiltration by terrorists. The Sessions-Nelson Border Security Act is a step in that direction.

The world could use more dialogue about its differences — a little understanding goes a long way. There are many online forums where people with different perspectives yell at each other and hurl abuse. There aren't so many where completely different points of view are expressed rationally and constructively. That's why The World Forum was created.
