AN evil foster mother was yesterday convicted of horrifically abusing three children -- to raise them "in accordance with her faith".

Fanatical Jehovah's Witness Eunice Spry, 62, believed the two girls and a boy were possessed by the Devil and wanted to "purify" them.

She beat them with sticks and metal bars, forced them to drink bleach and eat their own vomit and faeces, and starved them naked in a locked room for a month.

She also kicked them, pushed sticks down their throats, strangled them, forced their hands on a hot cooker and rubbed their faces with sandpaper, a court was told.

The kids were banned from listening to pop or wearing trendy clothes -- and were punished if found with sweets or music mags.

One punishment saw the trio, identified only as Victims A, B and C, forced to stay totally still for long periods. If they moved they would be beaten as a further deterrent.

The abuse went undetected for almost 20 years as Spry pulled the youngsters out of school and taught them at her two rat-infested homes in Tewkesbury, Gloucs.

Council inspectors also failed to spot the horror despite regularly visiting to check on the kids' education.

But it finally came to light in December 2004, when Victim A -- one of the two girls -- ran away from home.

Victim B and Victim C, the boy, made statements to police and Spry, estranged from her second husband, was arrested in February 2005.
Doctors called the kids' injuries "extraordinary". They also had depression. Both girls had attempted suicide.

Spry, described as chilling and cold, denied abusing the three and said she was only trying to bring them up according to her faith.

 I went to great lengths to protect them from immorality.
"From a Christian point of view we expect our children to be obedient. As it says in the Bible, `Children, be obedient to your parents and make the Lord proud'."

But Victim A said they were treated as "slaves", rarely allowed out and told to lie about their bruises . She said: "We were beaten, starved, drowned in the bath and kicked down the stairs.

"Mum had an array of sticks, and would beat us with them and kick us till we were collapsing with pain.
"If we screamed she'd push the sticks down our throats."
Victim A said the family's homes were infested with rats and the children would often sleep on the floor.

At one point she said Spry made her wear a sign on her back at her local Jehovah's Witnesses church, reading: "This child is evil. Do not look at her or talk to her."

The girl said her earliest memory was of Spry making her eat dog food and, when she was sick, eat the vomit.
Victim B said Spry had a system of punishments for lying -- heavily prohibited by Jehovah's Witnesses.

Parents obviously have a very powerful influence on their children. Even when they are abusive and insensitive towards their offspring, children still desire whatever vestige of love and approval they can get from their parents, and will often be obedient just to receive attention and care. Understanding this dynamic helps to explain how children growing up in the Watch Tower may be so heavily influenced by the need for approval that they are willing togive up whatever goals or aspirations they may have in order to please their parents, even long after they leave home and/or get married.

A Phobic World View

The first step that the Watch Tower takes in their indoctrination of their followers is to develop the concept of the "universal war" that all people are inevitably caught up in, namely, that Satan has declared war on Jehovah, and we are automatically on one side or the other; there are no fence-sitters.

If you are not doing all that the organization asks, you are on the side of the devil. Everything outside of the Watch Tower is controlled by the devil, and all persons who are not Witnesses are misled by the devil and are bad or dangerous to associate with. An unbalanced fear of the supernatural is encouraged. Witness children are told to avoid "worldly" magazines, movies, TV shows, music, etc. Any information critical of the Watch Tower is automatically evil and dangerous. Most doctors are evil for wanting to administer blood transfusions. Children have nightmares about mom or dad having to refuse a blood transfusion. Everything is made to appear as part of a large conspiracy to destroy Jehovah's Witnesses. Satan is feared totally out of proportion to the role as represented in the Bible.

What is the end result? The child learns to fear life itself, at least outside of the Watch Tower, so that if he/she were to ever leave the organization, the devil would destroy him/her and he/she would become miserable and suicidal. I personally knew several members of the Watch Tower's Bethel family at their headquarters in New York who knew the organization was wrong, but could not leave due to fear that they were incapable of getting a job, or that their lives would disintegrate.

They were the victims of carefully planted PHOBIAS.

Many of these phobias are rather obvious to outsiders. Simple, harmless things are blown out of proportion in order to keep Witnesses secluded from the real world. For instance: Birthdays are evil because someone is being worshipped. Christmas is evil because thousands of years ago someone worshipped the sun on December 25th. Saluting the flag is worshipping your country and a sign that you belong to Satan's kingdom rather than God's Kingdom.

Saying "darn" or "geez" is the same as cursing.
Smoking cigarettes is a form of drug abuse that can lead to demonic control. Little wonder that Witness youths are so paranoid and shy of the world! Even when they leave the organization, the phobias are still there, controlling their lives until they are recognized and eliminated through counseling and/or self-awareness.

Many of our readers were raised Jehovah's Witnesses and still remain VICTIMS of multiple phobia implantations. Many struggle with low self-esteem and self-worth, since the Watch Tower implants and perpetuates such problems.

My nephew was one of many who felt the literal sting of the Watchtower's stance of "spare the rod, spoil the child." I still remember the sick, accepting smiles on the faces of other Jehovah's Witnesses when my nephew(s) were being dragged off to the bathroom by their father Here's an excerpt from my book, OUT OF THE COCOON:

"When I was twelve years old, my nineteen-year-old sister married a Jehovah's Witness, and one year later she delivered a beautiful baby boy. Sadly, Jon would come to know at a tender age of one the frustration I experienced sitting on that anthill during those long sermons in the Kingdom Hall. Since there wasn't a Sunday school atmosphere at these meetings; young children weren't allowed to amuse themselves with toys or coloring books. When Jon started fidgeting, I did everything in my power to try to keep him still...When I ran out of tricks and could no longer contain his energy, his father grabbed him by the arm and literally dragged him to the restroom to beat him. Jon's beating became such a ritual that when his daddy reached for him during a meeting, he knew it meant a beating. He cried and pleaded "No, Daddy" as he buckled his legs, refusing to walk willingly to meet his fate. Everyone in the Kingdom Hall could hear his screams. The sound that echoed from the blow varied; sometimes Jon's father used his hand, sometimes a belt. After ten or fifteen minutes, they would return with Jon hyperventilating, desperately trying to catch his breath. Beaten into composure, he would sit still for a while longer. Usually he stared motionless into space, his eyes bloodshot from crying. If fate smiled on him, Jon fell asleep in my arms for the duration of the meeting. If not, then back again to the restroom he would go for another beating and the cycle continued, until the closing prayer. It broke my heart. I wanted desperately to stop the abuse, but I was a child myself and didn't know what to do to save him, or me. One heart-wrenching day in particular is forever seared into my memory. My sister confided in my mother, father, and me that Jon, then two years old, had asked his father to hit him on his hands with the belt instead of his buttocks. When asked why he wanted to be punished that way, he replied, "Because my butt is too sore." It sickened all of us. But none of the adults--my sister, my mother nor my father--did anything about it... Within a year, my sister had another child and his fate, sadly, was no different than Jon's. Meanwhile, my sister's husband was rewarded for his devotion to the faith. He was made an Elder."

Lest you think that this was an isolated incident, it was not. I witnessed dozens of children being slapped, bullied, beaten and pinched for displaying age-appropriate, normal restlessness. Since my departure I've heard from thousands of adults who were abused emotionally, physically or sexually as Jehovah's Witness children. I haven't been in here in a long time, only because there's never the time. But it strikes me as very odd that Jehovah's Witness bashing was going on when I last looked around here for more than just a moment.

What is it about the World Forum that attracts Jehovah's Witness bashers?

I haven't read everything above, but to the extent that I was able, I was not impressed. There's two ways to teach. You can be authoritative or else you can be authoritarian. With the first approach, Someone tells us how it is, period. The second approach, which has nothing to do with being special, sees the teacher/reporter/whatever stating a certain position and having an explanation for that position that goes beyond "because I say so."

I might just delete World Blog from my bookmarks, when here I was thinking that, hard as it's been, I just 'have to' one day contribute to it.

As a lot of bullied women online have discovered - reportedly (See Boing Boing for example) - the cloak of free speech is often used by abusers who hide behind the safety of a keyboard, much the way idiots in cars become more polite outside of them in face to face encounters. And the online community is coming to realize that accountability and free speech are not mutually exclusive things. Afterall, Don't operators have freedom? If folks here are shy, due to a possibly poorly thought-out concept of free speech, to stomp on abusers and be accountable, That is fine. But know that the quality of your visitors may drop as a result.

I'm not saying that folks here don't have a basis for their ranting. Although I suspect that more than a little of it comes from self-interested individuals and groups. What other explanation for the continuation and intensity of it? I guess it could just be plain old self-righteousness. 'If we can make sure that tiny, defenceless miniority over there is wrong, that will make us right'. If there's truth to the claims we see here, often, then do a better job of making your cases. Otherwise, The last thing any 'world' forum needs, is a dumping ground for hate literature.

Jehovah's Witnesses "bash" all other religions with a supremacist attitude that the rest of us are dead meat at Armageddon so they don't need to be truthful with us inferiors who are gonna die anyway.

Up close and personal Jehovah's Witnesses can be wolves in sheep's clothing.
